Essaouira to Bouabout

THE START LINE
  • Essaouira 20th March 2016
After an early start out of Luton, we arrive in a somewhat warmer climate than we left. I say we… I’ve a confession, I’ve sneaked along a cycling partner for the start of this journey, namely, Jude! Yes, female, but she tells me she’s tough and akin to a machine… we’ll see.
Arrival Essaouira
The journey/adventure started before we even got through the terminal. Nearly two hours just to get to the car park.
First, passports had to be checked by all in sundry on the apron, and then asked, where had we come from!

Planes, Coaches and Automobiles!

PRE – JOURNEY
My plan is to start in a warm’ish country for spring, heading northwards into Europe as the summer takes hold.
After many hours, OK days, I chose the coast of Morocco. I’ve never been to north north west Africa … so why not!
Wash
Months before departure is spent buying and then sending back new bits of kit, I think I thought I would need! Then, what can’t go back is put on eBay.
What a palaver!
New bearings
In the mean time I’m prepping my Thorn Sherpa ready for the start line.
The main things obviously been the points of contact.

The BiG Pack

Packing for nigelsbicyclejourneys.com.
Too much, and I’ll have to haul it, post it back or give it away. Which is not a travesty just a plain waste of money.
I’ve compiled a list of what I wish to take. But, it has been said in dark circles: “gatherer all you wish to take, then pack 10% of it, as that’s all you’ll ever need”! I could well be hearing this ringing in my ears at a later date!
Kit
Anything with a line through I’ve already ditched before leaving home or onroute. Continue reading

A One Way Ticket, A Homebuilt Bicycle and I

So here we are, a month before I abdicate this isle once again for adventures, journeys and destinations afar.
I say ‘once again’, as this seems to be a theme of mine! Previously I departed in 2001 to backpack ten months round the world. Soon after my feet were itchy again, and I was off in 2003 to South Africa to train as a commercial pilot. In due course the deserts and open skies of Namibia treated me to a colonialistic adventure as a safari guide and pilot ‘About‘.
Now, after two and a half years back in England I feel the propensity for a new chapter. I’m as yet not comfortable with been fully ‘plugged in’, and I’m still opting for the Red Pill. But, one must also choose wisely!
Since been back in Blighty I’ve cycled about everywhere I needed to go, along with commuting to work on every occasion too (The Commute). I hope this conditioning bodes me well for my future ladened days down under.  Continue reading

Mr Badger

After two and a half years of uneventful commuting (
The Commute) on my trusty ‘Cannondale Bad Boy’, with no falls/tumbles/spills as yet, that period came to an end on; Tuesday 11th July 2012 at 2215hrs.
Any cycle that is uneventful in regards to calamities is a good cycle. Until Mr Badger materialized!
